access to care worldwide
In theory, every person in the Netherlands and Belgium can obtain healthcare, regardless of his or her residency status. Every person has a right to care that is medically necessary. You can find more information about this in the section 'Support in getting access to healthcare'.
By no means does everyone around the world have equal access to medical and other care. Moreover, the living conditions in some parts of Africa and Asia are unhealthier than in large parts of Western Europe. From a global perspective, people who don't live in the 'rich West' already have a greater chance of becoming ill, regardless of HIV or ethnicity.
The access to anti(retro)viral treatment is totally out of balance between the North and the South. This inequality has been acknowledged by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the General Council of the United Nations. The WHO determined in 2003 that anti(retro)viral medicines are essential medication. Nevertheless, developing countries face many obstacles in getting access to these treatments.
In most developing countries, the access to anti(retro)viral treatment, but also to treatments for other diseases - whether or nor they are related to HIV - is very limited.
