desire to have children
My name is Marlies and I've known for 2 and a half years that I am HIV-positive. As soon as I got the idea that I could still have children, I went to my doctor to hear what he would say. He assured me that if I had a desire to have children, then I could.
Four months later I was pregnant. At first I didn't expect it, but I felt real weak and nauseous and went to the doctor to see if everything was OK. He checked me and said that everything was in order and that he only needed to take a pregnancy blood test because I had only had a urine test the week before and it was negative.
Fifteen minutes later he confirmed I was pregnant. After about 3 and a half months I started an old combination therapy which helped reduce, until undetectable, the amount of HIV virus in the blood. This regimen was a total of 12 pills per day, 6 during the day, and 6 in the evening. It was very important that the medicine be taken on time. In order to give birth naturally, the amount of the virus in the blood had to be lowered. Viral load should be between 50 and 0. Thus, you cannot have a caesarian section.
So taking this medicine, I could have a natural childbirth. My little son was tested for HIV immediately after his birth and nothing was found. It is a really beautiful moment to feel such a tiny baby against the body. After one month, three months, and six months was my baby tested for HIV. It is really exciting to think often of how healthy my little son is.
The chance that your child is infected after taking the medicine during pregnancy is small but certainly possible. Also your child gets one month's medication given in a sweet drink 4 times a day. This drink must be taken on a strict time schedule and is therefore really exhausting. After 7 months my boyfriend and I heard that my wonderful son was healthy. And now I enjoy him as much as I can. I am now thinking of my second child.
