for and by young people with HIV

medication

I come from a nonconformist family which holds freedom in high regard. I am allowed to practice that freedom. The objective of life is to make communities work, to develop wisdom and work together to a better understanding of the problems of the world.

For the generation that came after the introduction of the combination therapies in 1996, HIV no longer meant dying, HIV meant living ! One could replace the fear and hardship of HIV with something positive, active, idealistic. You're young, your life is only now beginning. Since you're young, you should hang on to the belief that living life completely is doable as long as you believe in yourself and your natural inborn strength and energy. Only when you care for yourself can you care for others. And the meaning of life? What nonsense ! I lived normally, first without, now with HIV.

From: Inga Mielitz, 'Ik leef posithiv'; spiritualiteit en zingeving in de omgang met hiv en aids ['I Live PositHiv': Spirituality and the Giving of Meaning in Dealing with HIV and AIDS]. Uitgeverij de Graaff, 2004.
