for and by young people with HIV

free time

When I go out, I prefer Antwerp because I can always enjoy myself there. In November 2004, I took part in "Take care" week. During this week, T-shirts with the logo "take care" were handed out. I wore one of these once when I went out.

I was taking it easy with my Spanish boyfriend when I noticed a guy checking me out. I looked back at him and eventually we started talking. The first thing he asked was if I was the guy from Eeklo. I met this guy before on the Net, when I was still living in Belgium. We eventually stayed longer than planned, and so there was dancing, drinking and a lot of laughter. Then he asked what the T-shirt meant.

I told him why I was wearing it and that it had been a year since I tested positive for HIV. He was taken aback and surprised that I was so open about this. We had a long chat and afterwards came away with the experience of sharing a pleasant evening.

Obviously I don't always walk around wearing this T-shirt with the hopes of talking with someone about it. Going out is after all about having fun. One should just do that and not think about HIV!!
